A teenager went to get a job at a big corporation and did all the dirty work no one else wanted until she got a call from a millionaire one day, and her life changed.

"I've sent my resume, but I haven't received any emails or heard anything. So, I came here," Sandra said to the manager of the grocery store where she applied to work for during her summer holidays.

Sandra was raised by a single mother, who did her best, but they didn't have much to save for the 14-year-old's future, especially because she had her eye on attending medical school. So, Sandra decided to send out resumes and work as much as possible. Usually, her mother would refuse during the school year because she wanted Sandra to focus on her grades and the few extracurricular activities she could enroll in.

But Sandra insisted and applied at several places. However, this grocery store was the best option. It was close to her house in a neighborhood in Cincinnati, and her mother wouldn't worry about her much if she was there.

"You better start believing it, girl."

"I'm sorry, child. We're just not hiring right now," the manager, Mrs. Cleaver, said, shaking her head.

"Please, I'll do anything. I can work part or full-time, and I can do anything. All the things that others don't want to do. I'm also pretty strong. I know I look skinny, but I can carry boxes like crazy. When my mother buys the groceries for the month, we get them out to our apartment in one trip," Sandra explained eagerly, and Mrs. Cleaver gave her a knowing smile.

Sandra explained that she wanted to save money for medical school, and the manager finally nodded, pursing her lips.

"You know what? Let's do it. Can you start working today?" the manager said, and Sandra almost hurt her neck, nodding fiercely. She was excited. Mrs. Cleaver took her in the back and gave her a vest and a broom.

Her first assignment was to sweep outside because dirt and leaves had accumulated too much. Sandra did it without complaint. Mrs. Cleaver then assigned her to clean the customer and employee bathrooms, which was a rougher request. But the teenager said she wouldn't whine and kept her word.

Eventually, Sandra started getting all the dirty and heavy tasks other employees hated. Some even took advantage of that and asked her for help when they didn't necessarily need her. But Sandra did everything gladly for everyone, no matter how grueling the task was. Mrs. Cleaver liked her attitude and took note of it.

In a world where teenagers her age wanted to become internet stars, it was nice to see someone enjoy honest hard work.

Little did Sandra know that Mrs. Cleaver spoke to her superiors, who talked to their bosses, and eventually, the store owner found out about her and decided that a phone call was in order.

"Hello?" Sandra answered her cell phone. She was on her break at work, so it was allowed.

"Is this Sandra, who works at the market?" a male voice wondered curiously.

"Yes," the teenager answered, confused.

"Well, my name is Ronald, and I own that store," the man revealed, but Sandra scoffed.

"Yeah, right. The owner of this store – this big chain – is calling me, a random employee. Ha!" she laughed sarcastically.

"You better start believing it, girl. Because Mrs. Cleaver and her bosses brought you to my attention, and you know what I value the most in the world?" Ronald continued.

"I don't know. Good business?"

"Well, yes, that too. But you can only have good business thanks to hard-working people like you. Young teens don't want to do dirty work these days, and I've heard that your dream is to attend medical school. So, I'm inviting you to apply for my foundation's scholarship. Normally, we only take seniors, and I understand you're just 14. But that's the kind of reward you get for hard work," Ronald added.

"Wait, are you serious? You're Mr. Callahan? The millionaire?"

"Yes, I said that already, girl. I'll send you the application details soon, and good luck!" Ronald finished and hung up.

Sandra was shocked. She went to Mrs. Cleaver to confirm it was actually the owner, and she nodded. "I can help you with the application," she offered as well.

With the help of Mrs. Cleaver and her mother, Sandra applied using all her school transcripts, extracurriculars, and her hard work at the store to bulk her resume. They submitted the application hoping for the best.

After a few months, she thought nothing would come of it. But her mother had agreed that she could work part-time during the school year in the afternoons to keep building her college fund. But one day in November, the call came. She received a scholarship for $250,000, which was more than enough for pre-med, medical school, and possibly a Ph.D.

All because of her hard work.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Hard work pays off in many ways. Sandra worked as diligently as she could at the grocery store, and her efforts paid off in the best way possible. Her future was bright and limitless thanks to that money.
  • Young people today have been dealt harsher circumstances. With several world crises and market crashes, younger people have to work thrice as hard as older generations to simply survive. The fact that they still do it is remarkable.
