Robyn Richardson and her husband Peter shared two daughters named Ella and Mia. When Robyn died, she left her eldest daughter Ella an old baby carriage and a dusty doll. Meanwhile, her youngest daughter Mia inherited a house.

Robyn and Peter started their family early. Robyn was only 21 when she gave birth to Ella, and she was honest enough to admit that she was not ready to become a mother at the time. Their second daughter, Mia, was a blessing for the couple. When Robyn got pregnant at the age of 28, she was more than ready to take care of her child.

Unfortunately, while she was pregnant with Mia, her husband Peter died in a plane crash. Thinking that Mia was the final memory she shared with Peter, she loved and adored her more than anything in the world. Likewise, Ella was ecstatic to be an older sister.

Ella and Mia shared a close relationship with one another as siblings. They would always share their toys with one another, study together, and even walk home from school together. However, as Mia started getting older, their relationship suddenly turned sour.

Ella had always dreamt of becoming a fashion stylist. This dream of hers was not taken seriously by her mom, as she believed it wouldn't get her daughter anywhere. Still, Ella was determined to pursue her dream, so she decided to move to New York at the age of 19 to study fashion while working at a retail store.

While Ella was starting to work hard to make her dreams happen, Mia began depending on her mother even more. She refused to work, and this meant Robyn worked day and night to provide for her daughter's needs.

Admittedly, Ella was jealous of how Robyn would give Mia all that she asked for. She made sure that this did not stop her from having a close relationship with her sister, though, and she vowed to take care of her younger sibling for as long as she could.

One day, as Robyn was walking home from work, she was hit by a drunk driver and it cost her her life. Ella rushed to be by her sister's side for their mother's funeral, and it was there that she bid Robyn her final goodbyes. While she was absolutely devastated by what happened, her emotions shifted after finding out what her mom had on her will.

While Mia was left with the home she and Robyn lived in, Ella was given an old baby stroller and a filthy doll. At that moment, she felt her face turning hot. Is this meant to insult me, mom? She thought to herself. As she had no other outlet for her anger, she started arguing with Mia.

"Are you happy now, Mia? Mom already gave you everything she possibly could've while she was alive, and now, she's leaving you with everything valuable too now that she's dead? Didn't it ever occur to you that compared to how she treated you, it was as if I didn't exist?" she said.

Mia sighed at her sister's words. "I had no idea she gave her lawyer a will, Ella. Plus, it was your choice to move to an entirely different city. You wanted to pursue your passion despite mom arguing against it. It only makes sense she left you with nothing," she said with a sarcastic tone.

Ella was shocked at the disrespect her younger sister was showing her. "I can't believe you just said that, Mia. After everything I've tried to do for you."

"Geez, Ella. There should be no hard feelings between us. I didn't know anything about the will she wrote. Anyway, since she left the house with me, I do plan to sell it. I'll put it up on sale next week, so please do clear your stuff... or throw it away, whatever you prefer," she said before walking away.

"What do you mean you're going to sell it? This house holds all of what's left of our family. How can you sell it as if it meant nothing?" Ella said, storming after Mia.

"Who cares? Mom's dead, and we have the rest of our lives to live. I need the cash, and I've made up my mind so stop pushing it," Mia said, slamming the door on Ella's face.

Disappointed, Ella took one last look at the living room before heading up to her childhood bedroom to clear her stuff. After packing everything, she walked away while pulling the old baby stroller in one hand, and a suitcase in another.

Ella took the stroller with her to New York but ultimately forgot about it as she got caught up with work. That same day, she decided to cut ties with her sister by changing her phone number so she would never get to contact her.

Years passed by, and she forgot about the stroller in her storage. When she was finally doing well and was moving to a bigger apartment in Manhattan, she saw the carriage filled with dust and spiderwebs. She decided to pull it out of the storage to have one good look at it.

I can't believe you left me with this, mom. Was I really the daughter you didn't want to have? she thought to herself.

As Ella lifted the doll out of the stroller, she discovered an envelope tucked under her dress. She took it and started reading:

"To my dearest Ella, I hope you don't think I left you with nothing. This doll is only 1 out of 100 that was once made by a prestigious manufacturer. This is now worth thousands of dollars, and I hope it's enough for you to start a clothing company of your own," the letter started. Surprised, Ella had to sit down before reading some more.

"Take it to an antique shop and they will tell you how much it's worth. My father was a collector, remember? This is the doll he left for me when he died, too. The stroller might not be worth much, but it was yours. I kept it because it reminded me of the lovely childhood you had with papa and I." At this point, tears filled Ella's eyes.

Oh, mom. I am sorry for doubting your love for me, she thought. "You might be wondering why I left the house with Mia. Well, as we lived together, I noticed how reckless she was. I wanted to make sure she had a roof over her head, at least. You, on the other hand, I know you're destined for great things. You will do great in your career, I just know it. I love you, honey."

As Ella finished the letter, she started sobbing. She never got to mourn her mother properly because of what happened, and she felt guilty. I'm sorry mom. I wish I spent more time with you, and I wish I never doubted you. I promise to make you proud.

Ella suddenly remembered Mia, so she decided to call her number. It went to voicemail, so she booked the next flight out to Atlanta to find her sister.

When she went to their old home, she discovered that Mia sold the house to an old couple ten years ago, and moved out. Since then, no one from their old neighborhood knew where she went.

Not knowing where to go, Ella walked around the city proper for a place to eat. As she was looking for a place, a woman, who was sitting down on the corner of a street caught her eye. It was Mia, and she was begging for money.

"Ella? Is it really you?" Mia said as she looked up. "I tried calling you through the years, but I figured you changed your number. I'm sorry about what happened. You were right, I should have never sold our house," she said, her eyes filling with tears.

Ella was gutted after seeing her sister in such a terrible state. "Mia, I'm sorry for letting go of our relationship. I shouldn't have let that fight get in the way of our sisterhood. Don't worry, I'm here now," she said, hugging her sister.

That evening, Ella and Mia checked into a local hotel. The next day, they flew back to New York together, where Mia started working in Ella's fashion company. Since that day, the sisters were inseparable and they worked together in building Ella's empire.

What can we take from this story?

  • Although it may seem like they do sometimes, parents don't actually play favorites. It seems as if Robyn's favorite was Mia through the years, but she actually loved her daughters equally.
  • Jealousy is the root cause of many failed relationships. Jealousy can ruin even the most tight-knit relationships with those we love. Ella decided to cut ties with Mia after finding out her mother left her with nothing, and it caused a decade-long rift between the sisters.
