Lucas visited his mother Lily's grave every month, bringing with him a bouquet of her favorite white lilies. On one occasion, he was surprised to find a man approaching the grave carrying the same flowers.

When Lucas was only eight, his mother, Lily, died of cancer. Unfortunately, her fight was extremely short, leaving the world just a couple of months after being diagnosed.

At 8, Lucas felt lost after losing his mother. He grieved for years, while his father Leo shed no tears. In fact, it didn't take long until he entered another relationship, taking Lucas' stepmother Samantha into their home.

Lucas was polite to Samantha as he began to realize that her stay in their home was likely permanent. For a while, she started acting like a mother figure to the young boy, but that all changed once the marriage contract was signed.

After Leo and Samantha got married, they pushed Lucas to the side. All they cared about was themselves, and they only gave Lucas the bare minimum, enough for him to purchase his school needs.

One day, knowing he had not asked his dad for money in a while, he approached him to ask for some cash to purchase Lily's favorite flowers to celebrate her 35th birthday. As he entered their room, Samantha shot him a glare. "What are you doing in here?" she asked.

"I just wanted to ask for a couple of dollars to buy a nice bouquet for mom. It's her 35th birthday, and I wanted to visit her grave," Lucas replied.

Samantha rolled her eyes. "Get out of here! Your mother is dead, so stop wasting our money on her. She's not coming back, honey; I'm here to stay."

"Please, please, just a couple of dollars. This is the last time I'm going to ask you for money. Dad? Please?" Lucas said, tears filling his eyes.

Despite his begging, nothing changed. His father supported Samantha's remarks, and they shut the door on his face. Disappointed, Lucas ran out of the house crying, clutching onto a framed picture of his mom. "I'm sorry, mom. I wanted to give you your favorite flowers today."

Lucas found himself staring through the window of a flower shop. When the florist noticed he was crying, she went out to ask him what was wrong. "I would really like to get my mother some flowers, but I only have $2," he said.

"I'm sorry, honey, but flowers are in demand right now because it's Valentine's Day. I won't be able to give you a bouquet for $2," the florist said. Lucas nodded and turned towards the door when a man suddenly spoke up to help him.

"Get the boy whatever he wants. I'll pay for the bouquet," he said. Surprised, Lucas turned to him. "Thank you so much, kind sir. It's my mom's birthday today, and I think this will make her really happy," he said, hugging the man.

The man patted Lucas on the head, smiling. "Any mom would be lucky to have you as their son! By the way, I think your mom has great taste. I came over to buy white lilies, too!" the man said, raising the bouquet he was holding.

Lucas asked him if he was buying it for his mom, and the man shook his head. "No, I'm not getting them for my mother. But I'll tell you; I'm giving it to someone very special to me. Anyway, I'll go ahead and give this to her now. Enjoy your day, young man," he said before handing the florist some cash to pay for Lucas' bouquet.

After getting the beautiful flower arrangement, Lucas happily walked to the cemetery. February weather was extremely cold in their hometown, and he was shivering. When he got to the grave, he sat beside his mom and kept himself warm in the last jacket his mother ever bought him.

"Hi, mom, happy birthday. I hope you're doing okay up there," Lucas said, staring at the tombstone. "Dad wouldn't give me money for your flowers, mom. But you know what? A kind man offered to pay for your bouquet. I think you would've liked him, mom."

Lucas couldn't stop his tears from falling again, and he continued to speak to his mom. "At school, mom, our teacher told us that whenever we're sad, we should talk to someone who makes us happy. That's you, mom. I wish I could always talk to you. Please come back, mom. I miss you so much," he sighed.

Just as he finished talking, he heard a familiar voice behind him. "She misses you, too. I'm sure of that," the man said. He turned around and saw the man who paid for his bouquet earlier in the day.

"Oh, it's you! You're Lily's son?" he asked, surprised. Lucas nodded and was just as surprised as him, wondering how the kind man knew his mother.

"Your mom and I were the best of friends. However, after something that happened a couple of years ago, we couldn't see each other again. I'm Harry," the man said, extending his hand for Lucas to shake.

"My name is Lucas. Mom, this is the guy I was talking about! He paid for your bouquet at the flower shop," Lucas said, turning back to his mom's grave. Harry couldn't help but smile at Lucas' innocence.

"You know, Uncle Harry, I was just telling mom about you. And then you came! Do you want to sing her a happy birthday together?" Lucas asked, and Harry nodded.

They sang Lily a happy birthday together, and they cut the cake that Harry brought as well. After spending a couple more minutes with Lily, Harry offered to drive Lucas home. Once they got home, Lucas invited Harry in, but Samantha stopped them right by the door.

"Where have you been? You were gone the entire afternoon. Is this what your mother taught you? Huh?" She said, without realizing that Lucas wasn't alone.

"You never used to care where I went. Please leave me alone," Lucas said, staring blankly at Samantha. Her eyes widened, and she was furious.

"Lucas! You ungrateful little child! Did you just answer back at me?" she said, clenching her jaw.

"You don't care about me, anyway. You're a horrible person!" Lucas yelled, and it was the last straw for Samantha. She raised her hand at him until Harry stood in front of Lucas.

"Don't even think about it," he said, holding her arm away.

"Who on Earth do you think you are?" Samantha said, surprised. "He's my son, and I can do whatever it is I want with him. He needs to be disciplined!"

Outraged at how Lucas was being treated, he decided to drop a truth bomb: "He is NOT your son. He's mine," Harry said, much to the surprise of Lucas.

Hearing the commotion, Leo stormed outside. "And who told you you could step foot in my property? And how dare you make that bold statement out here," he said, going face to face against Harry.

"Do you want to do a DNA test then, Leo? Something you refused to do years ago?" Harry said, staring at a panicking Leo.

"There's no need for that. It's a good thing you came. I was getting sick of raising this brat anyway. You can take him," Leo said, storming back inside the house.

"Dad? How can you say that? What's happening?" Lucas said, tears streaming down his face.

"You want the truth? Well, here it is. You're not my biological son. I was getting sick of seeing you, being reminded of Lily's love for someone that wasn't me. I've been meaning to leave you in an orphanage anyway," he said, and Lucas was distraught.

After what had happened, Harry took Lucas with him in the car. Once he stopped crying, he began to tell him the whole story. Harry and Lily were childhood sweethearts up until they graduated college. Unfortunately, Harry was in a car accident and was left in a coma.

Fearing what would happen to her as she was pregnant at the time, Lily married Leo. When Harry finally recovered, it was too late, and Lily had already moved on.

"You have my eyes, Lucas. Something kept telling me we had a connection from the very first time we met. However, I won't force you to stay with me. That's a decision I want you to make for yourself," Harry said before getting a pile of letters out of the compartment.

"I sent you letters every year. However, Leo would just send them back to my address. I kept them all these years," he said, handing the letters to Lucas.

"There's a reason we met today, and I think it was mom's doing. I'll stay with you, dad. I think it's what mom wanted for me, too," Lucas said, looking at his father with a smile on his face. Harry enveloped Lucas in a big hug, and the two were in tears after finding each other for the first time in their lives.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Each person we meet enters our lives for a reason. Lucas and Harry's coincidental meeting at the flower shop was fate. They finally met one another after years of being apart.
  • Sometimes, letting go of the person you love is the right thing to do. Although Lily and Harry were madly in love, Lily had to let go of him, fearing what would happen to Lucas if she did not get married. Likewise, Harry let go of Lily after seeing she was doing well without him.
