Ever since her granddaughter Macy was young, Elena already decided she'd save up all of her money to one day pay for her wedding. When that day was finally nearing, she was heartbroken to find out that her granddaughter did not want to invite her to the special day.

When Elena was only 75 years old, her husband Stefan passed away. Not long after, her health started to deteriorate as well, and she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Her son Oliver decided to take care of his mom, and she relocated to Los Angeles to be with him and his family. Initially, Oliver, his wife Emma, and their daughter Macy were all very loving towards her. However, when her Alzheimer's started to worsen, their treatment changed as well.

Every day, Oliver and Emma would be arguing about whether or not Elena should be placed at a nursing home. While Oliver refused, he also did not want to argue with the wishes of his wife.

Elena would hear conversations like these happening every day, but she would swallow her pride and not do anything about it. After all, she wanted to continue seeing her granddaughter grow up to be the wonderful young lady that she was growing up to be.

In fact, after Stefan died, Elena wished that she could at least see Macy walk down the aisle before joining him in heaven. So, she hardly touched any of the money she's saved up through the years. She had been saving a bulk of it for when that time comes.

When the day finally came, Elena was overjoyed. Macy was getting married to a kind gentleman named Ben, and she couldn't be any happier. She offered a whopping $30,000 to pay for the wedding.

"Mom, I can't take that from you. I know you love Macy, but I have savings of my own and I can support her," Oliver said, refusing to get the large sum from her mother.

"Honey, I'm getting old. There's nothing more I can do with this money. It's more than enough for me to see my granddaughter's special day," Elena insisted.

While Oliver was hesitant, his wife Emma was eager to accept the cash. "Hey, your mom just wants to do something for her only granddaughter. It'd be rude not to accept it," she hinted at her husband, who was still refusing to budge.

In the end, Oliver had no choice but to accept the money from his mother. All along, Macy was unfazed and did not even bother to thank her.

"Come on. She's already living with us, it's only right she contributes something. I don't have to thank her," Macy said after Oliver handed her the check from Elena. Oliver was furious at his daughter for what he was hearing.

"How dare you speak to her that way, Macy! Is that how I've raised you? She's your grandmother. Show some respect!" her father said.

"I know she's my grandmother, but I mean it when I say I'm NOT inviting her to my wedding, and if you insist she comes, I'd rather not get married at all. I'm taking her out of the guest list," Macy said before slamming the door.

Little did she know, Elena heard their conversation from the next room. She was heartbroken, and it took a toll on her condition. When Oliver took her to the hospital one day, he was told her health would continue to deteriorate if they didn't take care of her well.

When Emma and Macy found out, they told Oliver what they've always told him: "We told you so!" The mother and daughter demanded that Elena be placed in a nursing home before the wedding.

"We have less than two weeks to go before the wedding, Oliver! Think of how many things we need to do. We need to send her to the nursing home right now," Emma said.

Elena, for the first time, decided on what to do herself. She told her son's family that she would not be attending Macy's wedding and that she would live in a nursing home for the rest of her life.

Oliver refused, but Elena assured him she would be okay. "Honey, your priority is your wife and daughter now. You don't need to worry about me. It is best if I leave," she insisted.

The morning she was set to leave the house was the same day as Macy's wedding. She looked at the picture of her and Macy as a baby on her bedside table, and she was in tears. She remembered how excited she was to see her granddaughter walk down the aisle.

She asked her son if she could see the wedding from afar. She assured him that Macy would not see her and that she would keep her distance. Oliver brought his mother along to the wedding venue and left her at the side, where she had a clear view of the aisle.

"I'm sorry I couldn't persuade Macy any better, mom. I'm glad you could still be here. I'll be right with you after I walk her down the aisle," Oliver said, making sure his mother was seated comfortably.

As she was getting comfortable in her seat, she could hear yelling from the room right beside her. She realized that it was Macy and Ben fighting.

"What do you mean you're canceling the wedding? Don't you see how many people are outside?" Macy shrieked.

"I don't care about the people outside. I'm not going to tolerate being with someone who doesn't respect her own grandparents, Macy. The fact that you didn't invite your own grandmother to your wedding says a lot about you," Ben replied.

Once again, Elena's heart sank as she realized they were arguing about her. She thought her granddaughter would call her, but instead, she insisted she made the right choice not to invite her to the wedding.

"We're all going to grow old, Macy. If you did this to your own grandmother, I can already see how you'll treat your mom and my mom in the future. You'll abandon them the same way you're abandoning your grandma," he said, shaking his head.

After Macy said she wouldn't be calling Elena, Ben called the wedding off. As he opened the door, he was surprised to see Elena standing right there.

"Grandma Elena, I'm sorry you had to hear that," Ben apologized before stepping aside so she could enter the room.

"You really just had to ruin everything, huh grandma? Your money means nothing now. There's no wedding happening," Macy said, sobbing on the couch.

Instead of speaking to her, Elena rushed to Ben. "Sweetheart, please. Don't cancel the wedding. I don't have to attend, for as long as she is happy. You two will be happy together, too. Don't worry about me," she said, trying to persuade him to return to the room.

"I'm sorry, Grandma Elena. I enjoyed every single moment I spent with you and your family. I think you're a wonderful person. I can't be with someone who doesn't value her own family, especially since we're going to be starting our own one day," he said, walking away.

As Elena was going to enter the room to console Macy, she shut the door and locked her grandmother out. Tired of trying to make herself worthy of Macy's love, she walked over to the wedding hall and sat down.

Instead of leaving, she decided to call the nursing home that she was going to live in and throw the elders a party, as a way of meeting them and building friendships with them.

That day, Elena and the other elders enjoyed their time, dancing, and eating the night away. I paid for all of this, so I might as well just have a good time, she thought to herself as she sipped from a glass of wine.

What can we take from this story?

  • You can't force things, no matter how much you try. Elena wanted to be in her granddaughter's life, but Macy kept pushing her away. In the end, even though she wanted to be loved by her granddaughter, she found peace after she stopped trying and instead focused on making the most of the rest of her life.
  • Karma is real. After Macy excluded Elena from the wedding, she ended up learning her lesson the hard way when her groom-to-be left her.
