After thirty years of marriage, Tom and Emily had lost the spark between them. They rarely communicated with one another and Tom would often complain about his wife neglecting herself. One day, she was taken by an ambulance, and the truth jolted him.

Tom and Emily had been married for three decades. They met at university, where they were smitten with one another since day one.

Emily was the student council president, always the most popular girl in the room. Meanwhile, Tom was a musician who could make all the girls swoon.

Despite all the attention placed on them by their classmates and friends, they only had eyes for one another. They were the campus' most famous couple, and they were everybody's favorite.

When they graduated, they went on to work in separate companies while living together. Emily was a successful marketing manager, while Tom worked in an IT company and performed at music gigs at night.

Eventually, they decided to get married when they had enough money to start a family. They bore a beautiful child named Lindsay, now 25 years old and living in New York working in a top 100 company.

They used to be a happy couple, and the beautiful pictures that hang on their home's wall remind them of that every day. They would go on exciting trips with their daughter, taking her to amusement parks, zoos, and beautiful scenic vacation spots through the years.

As Lindsay grew up, however, these trips started to decrease. She moved to another state, where she decided to pursue her own career. While her parents lived in Texas, she was all the way on the east coast, barely visiting them.

With their only daughter away and with their age catching up with them, Tom and Emily started to become homebodies. Emily retired from work, pursuing her passion for gardening to pass the time.

Meanwhile, Tom quit the IT world and decided to put up a small computer repair business in his garage to keep money flowing in for their daily expenses.

With their passions in different fields and with no daughter to keep them connected, Tom and Emily barely communicated. They'd be in separate rooms the entire day, shouting at each other whenever they needed something.

Tom paid no attention to his wife, leaving her to do the housework while he minded his own business. He expected her to serve him, as this is what he believed wives should do for their husbands.

"Emily, where's my favorite blue shirt?" Tom yelled one day.

"I washed it. Just wear your green one," Emily replied from the other room.

"What? I hate my green shirt!" he complained to her.

"Then pick something out of the closet, you have so many clothes. Where are you going anyway?" she yelled back.

"I'm going out for drinks with my friends. Don't wait up!"

When Tom was finished with work, he went to meet a couple of his friends at the bar. They spent the entire evening there while Emily was at home, watching TV in tears, longing for a healthy and happy relationship with her husband.

She could not understand how Tom could head out for drinks every week when they hadn't gone out on a date for years. They barely spoke to one another, and even during their meals at home, they hardly interacted.

Their routine remained the same for years. Tom spent the entire day in the garage while Emily tended to all the housework, such as cooking, cleaning, and watering her plants.

The garden was Emily's greatest treasure and sweet escape. She enjoyed taking care of her plants and flowers, making sure they bloomed beautifully.

During dinner that day, Emily decided she was tired of living such a monotonous life and tried to make a move. She hinted to Tom that they hadn't been on a date in a while, nor had he given her a gift. "I don't think I've received flowers from you in two decades, Tom. There's no romance in our relationship anymore," she told him.

Tom scoffed. "We're too old to be looking for romance in our lives. What are we, teenagers? Look at you! You're not as fresh as you used to be. Your beauty has faded, and you don't take care of yourself."

Emily could feel her eyes filling with tears. "So that's what you think of me? Just an old maid?"

"Well, if you made an effort at fixing how you look, then maybe I'd feel excited to take you out on a date," he responded before finishing his dinner and heading straight to the living room to watch TV.

Emily washed the dishes in tears. She stared at the window in front of her and saw nothing but an old woman. Maybe he's right, she thought to herself.

She felt insecure about herself, and she was starting to believe her husband's words because she hadn't heard a compliment from him in decades. Emily felt lowly of herself and thought she was no longer the beautiful and popular girl she once was.

Instead of longing for a date with her husband, she decided she would focus her energy on including him in her daily plans so they could spend more time together. The next day, she asked Tom to help her with the flower garden.

Tom hated housework, and when he found out she needed help with the garden, he became furious. He never understood why Emily kept tending to the garden, thinking it was such a useless hobby.

"You know how much I hate that garden. It's a waste of money. I'm not going to waste my time working on it," he yelled.

"But I need your help, Tom. I don't feel well, and I just really need to water these plants," Emily responded weakly, walking towards the garage, where her husband was.

"Then work less!" he cried out. "No one asked you to tend to that garden anyway."

Emily sighed and walked back inside the house. She wanted to argue with her husband and tell him that she does so much more every day than just tending to her garden, but she let it pass.

Instead, she went to the room to lay down on her bed and watched TV. After a while, she started to feel even more ill and went to sleep. A couple of hours later, Tom heard the sound of an ambulance outside, disrupting his loud music.

"What is that sound?" he grunted. He was irritated by the noise and decided to check it out. He opened the garage door and was surprised to see his wife on a stretcher, being taken away by an ambulance.

"Wait!" he tried to say, but it was too late. The ambulance had already taken off.

Tom quickly followed the ambulance in his car. When he arrived at the hospital, he found his wife inside the emergency room. He went to ask the doctor what happened. "What's wrong with her? Why was she taken to the hospital?" he asked.

"She's overly fatigued that it compromised her immune system. She will need to remain here for a couple of weeks so we can observe her and run some tests," the doctor explained.

When Tom saw his wife, he questioned why she was so tired. "I told you that garden was nothing but a hassle."

Emily shook her head, tears filling her eyes again. If only he realized all the other things I do for him every day. That garden is the only thing keeping me alive, she thought to herself.

Despite Tom's remark, all Emily asked was for him to water the flowers at home while she was gone. Tom agreed, but when he got home, he forgot about them, and they withered.

The next time Tom came to see his wife, she was hurt that he barely came to visit her. However, she decided to shrug off her thoughts and instead ask how the flowers were doing. "How is my garden?"

Tom was flustered, but he decided to admit that he had forgotten about them. "I'm sorry, I had been so busy with work that I forgot about them. They withered," he admitted.

At that, the pulse monitor recorded an increase in Emily's heart rate. The doctors asked her not to stress, as it would worsen her condition. It eventually did.

Tom started to realize how bad of a husband he had been to Emily. She barely asked for anything in their thirty years of marriage, and yet, when she did, he couldn't even give it to her.

The following day, Tom bought and planted new flowers for Emily's garden. He landscaped it beautifully and made sure to take care of them himself until Emily returned.

Tom picked her up in their car when she recovered and she was overwhelmed by her husband's surprise. Their front yard was filled with colorful flowers, and she beamed with happiness.

At that moment, Tom saw how beautiful his wife truly was. She had a youthful glow, and it reminded him of the very first time they met in university years ago.

Ultimately, Tom realized that it didn't take much to make Emily happy, and yet he neglected her for so long. He promised to become a better husband and to put their marriage first over everything else in his life. After all, she had dedicated so much of her life to him that it was only right he did the same.

Tom headed to the mall to buy Emily a new dress that afternoon. She invited her on a date to a fine dining restaurant downtown, and it rekindled the flame between the old couple.

Tom could not believe his eyes when he saw how genuinely happy Emily was. For him, she was as beautiful as she was when they got married thirty years ago, and her smile was so contagious it could make the entire room stop and stare.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Women are like flowers. If you take care of them, they flourish. If you neglect them, they fade. Tom did not put importance on his wife, and it took a toll on her. She felt unloved, but it also made her feel bad about herself, thinking she was not beautiful. When he started to make an effort to change that, Emily began to bloom and was always the most beautiful woman in the room.
  • A relationship is not always a bed of roses. When you choose to marry someone, you vow to love and support that person through thick and thin. When the honeymoon stage of your relationship is over, it is up to both of you to continue working on the relationship to keep it happy and healthy.
