A woman is stunned when her son kicks her out of her own house and sells it for a fortune, but years later she recognizes a beggar on the street as him.

Carol Wallace had been through a lot in her life. Many other women would have been embittered by their suffering but Carol had always kept her chin up, her hopes high, and love in her heart even when faced with the worst of betrayals.

At 55, Carol had a stable life with a good job and a pleasant home of her own. But just thirteen years before, she'd gone through a harrowing experience that had led to a period of homelessness -- and her own son had put her on the streets.

Carol had married for the first time when she was just 18 to a charming older man who had swept her off her feet. Unfortunately, her husband took up with an even younger woman shortly after their third wedding anniversary and the birth of their only child.

Carol was devastated and had sought the help and support of her parents. She was an only child since her older brother had passed away in an accident, and her parents were devoted to her. She got herself together and dedicated herself to her career and raising her son, Greg.

When Greg was thirteen, Carol met Charles. Charles was head over heels in love and pursued her tirelessly. Carol's parents were not convinced by Charles' apparent charm. They thought he was another smooth deceiver and feared that sooner or later he would break their daughter's heart.

Deceit and dishonesty always lead to disaster.

So they talked to their lawyer and put the deed to their house in their grandson's name. They talked to Carol and Greg and told him that the house WAS his mother's and was only in his name for safekeeping in case the proposed marriage to Charles didn't work out.

But despite her parents' misgivings, Carol was in love, so she married Charles. Sadly, a few years later, both her parents passed away within six months of each other. Carol grieved her parents deeply and Charles was sweet and supportive.

For eight years, Carol lived a happy marriage. She believed she'd finally met and married the man of her dreams. But she was in for a rude awakening. Two days after her 42nd birthday, Charles announced that he was divorcing her.

He explained (quite charmingly) that even though he did love her, he now felt his happiness lay elsewhere. He also insisted on a split of their assets and was very upset to discover that her parents' very valuable property didn't belong to her.

Carol moved into her parents' house which had been profitably rented out up until then. In the meantime, Greg had married and was busy building a successful practice as a psychologist.

Carol called her son and spoke to him about the house: "Honey, I think we should go to the notary next week and get the house back in my name."

"Mom," Greg said. "I have a lousy week coming up, and the week after that I'm going to Miami to see Grace's parents. We'll settle it when I get back!"

But when Greg came back, they didn't settle it. There was always some reason or another to put off the visit to the lawyer. Carol was irritated but not unduly alarmed. After all, this was her son...

Two months later, Greg dropped in unannounced. "Hi mom!" he said casually. "Listen, I want you to move out by the end of the week. I've sold the house."

Carol dropped the teapot she'd been holding, splashing boiling tea all over her legs. But at that moment, she didn't even feel the pain of the burns. "What?" she gasped. "I'm sorry, Greg, I didn't understand..."

"The house," Greg said coldly. "I've sold it. You need to get out by Friday."

"This is MY house!" cried Carol. "How could you sell it?"

"According to the law," he said. "the house is mine. It's in my name, my property, and since you don't even pay rent, you have to get out immediately."

Carol had three days to get out of the house and find a new place to stay. Fortunately, she had a good friend who took her in. She was grateful to her friend, but she lived in a tiny apartment with a big family, and after a week, she moved out.

She started living in her car, showering and changing at the gym, and no one even realized that she was homeless. After a year, she had scraped together a deposit on a small apartment. Bit by bit, she got herself back together, saved up a little nest egg, and even started dating a nice man.

Thirteen years after her son had kicked her out of her house, Carol was on her way out to dinner when she saw a homeless man begging in the car park. She remembered those bitter days when she'd lost everything, including her belief in humanity, and she was moved. She walked up to the man and pulled out $50 from her purse.

"Here," she said. "Take this, have a hot meal..." But just then, the beggar raised his head and the light of the streetlamp fell on his face. "Greg!" Carol cried. It was her son, but he was sadly altered. He was aged, thin, and ragged.

"What happened to you?" she gasped. "Where is Grace?"

"Mom?" Greg asked. "Is that really you? Grace... Grace left me. We sold the house for $400,000 but then I did some gambling...Grace took what was left. I did some shady deals and lost my license..."

"Come with me," Carol said, and gently helped her son to his feet. "You're not sleeping here tonight." She called to cancel her dinner date and took Greg home with her and gave him dinner.

That night, Greg slept on her couch, but the next day, Carol dipped into her savings and bought him a caravan to live in. With her help, Greg got a job as a counselor at a halfway house and slowly started putting his life back together.

Carol smiled. "My son, you should know -- no matter what, a mother's heart is always open!"
