A grandmother is disappointed to find out that the grandson she raised mocked a boy who wore dirty old clothes and who lived in a truck.

Michael was raised by his grandmother, Betty, who made ends meet through her tailoring business. She worked a lot, entrusting Michael to his teachers at school, whom she believed had a hand in raising him to be a good person.

At 13 years old, Michael only had two friends he'd always stay with at school. Of all the things they did together, the boys enjoyed mocking Kevin the most, the poorest boy in their class.

One day, Michael mocked Kevin as soon as he entered the classroom because he was wearing a printed T-shirt of a video game that was no longer popular. The shirt was old and worn out.

"Are we back in 2005? Why are you wearing such an old shirt? No one ever plays that game anymore," Michael scoffed.

Kevin looked down and continued walking to his chair. Disappointed that Kevin didn't respond, Michael decided to taunt him more. "Are your parents so poor that they can't spare five dollars to buy you a new shirt?" he laughed.

This time, Kevin decided to speak up. As he sat on his chair, just diagonal to where Michael sat, he said, "My father does not live with us, and my mom just lost her job. I don't mind wearing whatever, as long as I get to go to school."

The teacher had entered the room by this time. She was carrying a bag full of clothes. She caught the exchange between Michael and Kevin so she called Micahel's attention. "That's enough, Michael. There's nothing wrong with what Kevin is wearing. And Kevin, you'll be happy to find out that your other classmates had collected clothes for you to use!"

The teacher placed the bag of clothes by Kevin's table, and the boy couldn't help but smile. "Thank you, everyone. I appreciate it a lot," he said.

As the teacher walked back to the table, Michael rolled his eyes. "You're like a bum, accepting used clothes from people. Now I understand why all your clothes are worn out. They give you clothes they no longer want to wear," he whispered so their teacher couldn't hear.

During their break time, Michael saw that Kevin was playing with a very old tablet. He snatched the tablet from Kevin and laughed. "Does this thing even work? This is ancient!"

"Leave me alone, Michael. I'm not doing anything to you. Why do you keep tormenting me? Just give it back," Kevin said quietly.

"Take it then," Michael said, tossing the tablet at Kevin's feet. It fell to the floor and crashed. Kevin sighed, picking it up to see whether or not it still worked.

"Maybe if you pray hard enough, you'll get something like this from one of your donors," Michael said, waving his new tablet up in the air. "You're such a loser," he added before walking away.

That day, Grandma Betty picked Michael up after school. They were headed to New York that weekend, where she was to deliver a couple of clothing pieces she made at her shop.

On their way out of town, Michael spotted Kevin. He was at the back of an old pickup truck, fixing himself a place to sleep with an old mattress, a blanket, and a pillow.

Michael scoffed and asked his grandmother to stop the car. Wondering what happened, she stopped the car on the side of the road and Michael stepped out.

Michael walked up to Kevin, climbing on the back of the pickup truck. "Nice bed!" he said, pushing Kevin towards it. He laughed before jumping back down the back of the truck.

"You have such a sad life. You have no clothes, and you live in the back of a pickup truck. Hope you don't get sick!" Michael said before heading back to the car.

Grandma Betty watched Kevin who look defeated. He had tears in his eyes, burying his face in his hands as he sobbed. As soon as Michael got back inside the car, he wouldn't stop talking about Kevin.

"Oh, grandma. That's our class loser. He lives in a truck, wears donated clothes from our schoolmates, and owns a broken old tablet. It's such a pity. You'd laugh at him too," he said.

Grandma Betty couldn't get herself to continue driving. "Michael, how could you be so cruel? This is not the way I raised you! Imagine if you were in Kevin's shoes. How would you feel?"

Michael shrugged. "No one's ever going to make fun of me. We are rich, and I have everything I could need."

Disappointed at her grandson, Grandma Betty decided to teach him a lesson. She took away all of his new clothes and tablet and stopped picking him up from school in her Bentley.

Michael objected, saying it was a cruel punishment, but his grandma wasn't having any of it. "You need to learn your lesson. Experience how Kevin lives, and let's see if you'll still treat him that way after," she told him.

Left to wear old clothes to school and use an old tablet from his grandma's shop, Michael soon learned what it felt to be laughed at.

"What happened to you, Michael? Did your family go bankrupt?!" his friend asked, laughing at him.

"I guess you and Kevin can be best friends now," his other friend added.

Michael felt awful the entire day, and to make matters worse, he had to walk home from school. His house was five kilometers away, which would take about 45 minutes to an hour by foot.

After walking for about ten minutes, an old truck suddenly honked at him. It slowed down, and Michael saw Kevin and his mother inside. "Come on, we'll take you home," Kevin told him.

Michael was in tears when he entered the truck. He sobbed even more as soon as he sat down because he felt terrible for how he treated Kevin. "I'm so sorry," he told him. "I should never have judged you. I can't believe it took me walking in your shoes to realize how I was such a bad person."

"It's okay, Michael. I forgive you," Kevin assured him and Kevin's mom gave him a reassuring smile. "My mom always taught me to treat everyone with kindness, no matter how much they've wronged you. It's okay, Michael. Don't feel bad anymore."

As soon as they got to Michael's house, Michael invited Kevin and his mother inside. Grandma Betty and Kevin's mom prepared a good meal for the four of them, while Michael took Kevin to his room where he decided to give Kevin his new clothes and the extra tablet he had.

"Are you sure?" Kevin said, surprised. Michael nodded. "I have been blessed more than I deserve," Michael told him. "I'd like to share my blessings with you."

Michael and Kevin spent the entire afternoon playing video games until Grandma Betty called them for dinner. She was proud of her grandson for learning his lesson, and she was sure he would grow up to be a kind and compassionate man.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Don't be quick to judge people, as you don't know what they're going through. Before judging someone, you must understand that everyone faces a battle not everybody knows about. It doesn't cost anything to practice empathy.
  • A child's first teacher is their primary guardian. Before their teachers, a child's primary guardian plays an important role in shaping a person's thought process and mannerisms. It is crucial to instill good values, so they practice these when they get to school.
