Michael Reese was the kind of guy that no one really liked and he knew it. But there was one person who did like him, and that was Stephanie Doria. That she was also smart and beautiful and could have anyone she wanted astounded Michael.

At first, he thought Stephanie was dating him because of his dad's money. Then he saw her turning down a much richer guy. By some miracle this amazing girl loved him! Michael never imagined a day would come when he'd walk away from Stephanie and her love, but he did.

Michael and Stephanie had met in high school and started dating when they were 16. At first, Michael's father hadn't paid attention to their relationship, but when he saw that the two were going to college and still dating, he started worrying.

Then, on prom night, Michael proposed to Stephanie and she said yes. When Michael happily announced the engagement to his father the morning after the prom, he decided to take a hand.

"Mike," Neal Reese said. "You know I love you, and what I'm about to say is for your own good. You need to break up with Stephanie. Call off the engagement"

"Why?" asked Michael. "I thought you liked Stephanie."

"Sure I do!" Neal said with a sly wink. "She's a looker, and these hot low-class girls are good for fun, but I don't want you getting caught in a trap."

"Dad, I love Steph." Michael protested. "And she's not low-class..."

"Her father works in my factory and they live in a two-bedroom walk-up," Neal said coldly. "She's not the kind of girl you marry."

"I'm not breaking up with her, Dad," Michael said. "I love her and I'm going to marry her as soon as I finish college."

"And how are you planning on paying for college?" asked Neal. "You don't have a scholarship, your results are barely average. If you want me to foot the bill, you break up with that little tramp!"

That night, Michael and Stephanie had a date and he resolved to break the news. What Michael didn't know was that Stephanie also had news of her own. "Steph," Michael said hesitantly. "I have something to talk to you about..."

Stephanie looked even more nervous than Michael felt. "Me too, Mike," she said. "I hope... I hope you won't be angry..."

"What's going on?" asked Michael, more than willing to postpone the break-up even if it was just for a few minutes. "Just tell me, Steph, you know you can tell me anything."

Stephanie took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and blurted out: "I'm pregnant."

"WHAT?" asked Michael astounded. "You're WHAT?"

Stephanie was trembling. "I'm pregnant," she whispered. "I'm six weeks along..."

"You're going to have a BABY?" Michael gasped.

Stephanie shook her head. "No," she said. "Three. The doctor did a scan today. There are three babies."

Michael screamed, "Are you kidding me? THREE? My dad was right, you're a low-class bimbo looking for a free ride. We're finished, you hear? FINISHED! The engagement is OFF"

Michael went home and told his father everything. Neal Reese looked grim. "Get ready, Michael! She's going to hit us with a paternity suit..."

But she never did. In fact, Michael never heard from Stephanie again.

Michael went to college and studied for his MBA so he could join his father's company. College wasn't as fun as he had expected, and he never found a girl he could love.

He joined his father's company as planned, and started living the life that had been planned for him. He was successful and prosperous, and when his father died six years later, he became very rich, but he wasn't happy.

Six months after his father's death, Michael went looking for Stephanie. He tried to track her down through their high school alumni association but to no avail. Then one day he visited a mall his company was planning on buying and came face-to-face with the past.

He saw three identical little girls giggling and chasing each other around the fountain of the mall's grand court. "My children..." he thought. "They would be this age..." And then he saw Stephanie.

She was looking as radiant and beautiful as ever and holding out her arms to the three children he'd been watching. "Steph!" he cried, and she turned around.

She looked shocked to see him. "What are you doing here, Michael?" she cried angrily. "Go away!"

"Steph, I'm so sorry," Michael said. "I love you Steph, I've always loved you. I want to meet my daughters..."

"No!" Stephanie said. "You don't deserve them! They have a father, a wonderful father!" A man was walking toward Stephanie and the children and he frowned when he saw that she was upset.

"What's going on?" he asked and put his arm protectively around Steph. She turned and said something softly and the man looked very angry. He started walking towards Michael. He was a very big man.

He gave Michael a push and told him to go. With one last look at the three little girls playing Michael turned and walked away. He'd lost Stephanie, and he'd lost his children.

"What do I have?" he asked himself that night. "I have money..." He laughed bitterly and poured himself a glass of wine. He raised it in a mocking toast. "Thanks, Dad!" he exclaimed, then he started crying.

Stephanie and her husband had died in a car crash, leaving the three girls alone. They needed him, Michael realized. "Finally," he said to himself. "Someone needs me and I can actually help!"

Michael investigated and discovered the girls -- Diana, Sarah, and Janet -- didn't have enough money for college and had started a GoFundMe page. He made a $250,000 donation, then he contacted them.

The girls knew about him, and at first, they didn't want to take his money. Michael had to work hard to earn their trust, but finally, they agreed to get to know him. Twenty years after he walked away from the love of his life, Michael had a family.
