A boy accuses his mother of cheating on his late father after he notices her spending her nights out often. He lashes out at her, only to realize that the truth is far from what he thought.

15-year-old Trey sat enraged on the living room couch. The wall clock read 1: 30 a.m., and his mother, Kate, was still not home. He had noticed her exiting the house around an hour ago. That was the third time that week when he'd seen her leaving the house late at night.

Six weeks ago, Trey lost his father, Albert, to cancer. It was a severe blow to him and Kate, and after Albert's passing, Kate was very depressed.

Trey wanted Kate to be happy again and didn't mind if she dated someone. But her hiding it from him and disappearing for hours at night? That did not sit well with him.

So, as he sat on the couch, waiting for her to get home that night, he was determined to confront her. After another 20 minutes, he finally heard the sound of her car on the gravel outside their house.

As the front door opened and Kate entered, she panicked because she wasn't expecting Trey to be awake and sitting on the couch like that. "Trey! Jesus! You scared me!" she cried, trying to catch a breath.

Trey glared at her, his arms folded across his chest. "So, did you have a good time with your boyfriend, mom? When are you planning on introducing me to him?"

"What?" Kate frowned. "What makes you even say that, Trey?"

"I'll see you at 1:00. Don't be late!" said the message.

"What makes me say that?" He smirked, then an angry expression took over his face. "I know what you're up to behind my back, mom! You're out almost every night! It's been only 6 weeks since dad left us! How could you do this to him?"

Kate's eyes welled up. "Watch what you say, Trey! Are you out of your mind? How could you even—"

Suddenly, Trey started to cry. "That's enough, mom! You don't have to lie to me! I really wouldn't mind if you were honest, but why do you lie and hide it from me? I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU FOR THIS!" he screamed and dashed to his room, slamming the door behind him.

Kate stood dumbfounded, not knowing what to do. Trey didn't even give her a chance to explain herself. She eventually succumbed to her emotions and sank to the couch, her face buried in her hands and tears streaming down her cheeks. She decided to talk to Trey about it in the morning, but things didn't go as she'd hoped.

While they sat at the table for breakfast, Trey asked Kate to fetch him some milk from the fridge. As Kate stood up to walk to the fridge, Trey grabbed her phone, which was sitting on the table, and he saw a message notification from a man named Steve.

Kate's phone didn't have a lock, so Trey clicked open the message immediately to read it. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he was curious about the new man in his mother's life. He read the message and his eyes widened in shock.

"I'll see you at 1:00. Don't be late!" it read.

"Trey! Are you checking my phone?" Kate snatched the phone from his grasp when she returned. "Enough is enough, Trey! You're crossing the line!"

Trey laughed sarcastically, sure that he was right to blame her for cheating on his father. "STEVE! He's got a nice name, mom. So does he love you more than dad? Do you think he'll be a good father to me? Oh wait, I'm sure he doesn't want children, which is why you didn't tell me anything about your relationship."

Kate nearly slammed the milk on the table and looked Trey in the eyes. "It's pointless talking to you, Trey. You know what, how about you accompany me tonight? I really want you to see what your mother is up to with Steve! Yes, that'd be perfect! You'll come with me tonight and we'll meet Steve together! Alright? I'll wait for you!" she shot back while gathering her things and stormed out of the front door.

Trey glared at her as she walked away. "Fine, mom," he muttered angrily to himself. "I'll be waiting to meet him as well!" Then he picked up his school bag and left for school.

That night, as it struck 11:30, Kate got dressed and came down to the living room, where she met Trey, and they left home together. After a car ride of around 20 minutes, Kate pulled over at a dark and dingy building.

Trey was confused as he got down and looked around. The whole place smelled like rotting fish, and it wasn't long until he spotted the sign at the front of the building and realized it was a garbage recycling plant.

"Come on, let's go inside…." Kate said and she led Trey into the building. They came to a halt in a little room. Kate opened a locker in the room and took out a blue jacket as well as two sets of hand gloves and masks. She kept one set for herself and handed the other to Trey. "Let's go meet Steve now!" she said as she put on her jacket, mask, and gloves, and Trey followed her, still confused.

As they walked out of the building, a man in a blue uniform approached Kate with a clipboard. Trey glanced at the nameplate on his uniform: Steve.

"You're here early, Kate! Well done! Who is this boy with you?" he asked, looking at Trey.

"Oh, my son just wanted to look around the place. He might help me a bit if he wants…." she replied.

"That's fine, but let me tell you, he will not be compensated for it. Also, since this is your first time, I'll let this slide. You can't bring anyone with you to help you next time."

"Of course!" Kate smiled and nodded.

"Alright then," Steve said. "You'll be handling consignment number 54 tonight. Sort the trash ASAP since we need to finish that batch tonight. Get to work right away," he added and walked away.

"Are you happy now that you've met Steve? I warned you—" Kate turned to Trey and saw tears streaming down his eyes and face mask. "I'm sorry," he muttered, lowering his head. "I - I was wrong to judge you…."

"Exactly! I work as a trash sorter here and Steve is my supervisor. I haven't been cheating on your father. I've never loved someone as much as I loved your father, and I doubt I ever will. Now, excuse me and let me get to work since we won't be able to pay our bills if I don't work this job. You can leave now if you want..."

But Trey didn't leave. Instead, he hugged her and wouldn't stop crying. "I am so sorry, mom. Please forgive me. I promise to find a job too and help you out. I'll make it up to you!"

At that point, Kate's heart softened a little. She was a mother, after all, and she knew Trey had realized his mistake. So she hugged him and said, "I want you to focus on your studies, Trey. I want you to have a good life and grow into a good human! I am here to look after you. That's why I took up a night job. I don't mind working two jobs, okay?"

Years later, after graduating high school, Trey worked hard to obtain a scholarship to a top university. He worked hard and gave his all in college because he wanted to make Kate proud, and he did. After college, he got a good job and assured Kate that he would look after them.

"Forgive me for the times I hurt you, mom," he said, hugging her. "You looked after me when I needed you the most. It's now my turn to do the same for you. I love you."

What can we learn from this story?

  • Parents sacrifice a lot for their children so they deserve all the love and respect from them. Trey realized how wrong he was to accuse Kate of wrongdoing when he found out she was working a night job to support them financially.
  • Don't jump to conclusions. Trey accused Kate of dating Steve, although he wasn't aware of the whole picture. He should have given her a chance to explain.
