If you are the kind of person who can't resist peeking into a stroller or cooing at other people's babies, you will understand Linda. Linda was born to be a mom, but somehow it just never happened.

First, she didn't have the right man, then it wasn't the right time... Finally, when it WAS the right man and the right time, her body betrayed her. She'd given up all hope until she peeked into a stroller at a busy mall...

Linda saw the stroller parked in front of a shop that sold baby clothes and furniture. She thought that the mom might have ducked in for a second to look at something for her baby.

Of course, this was something very dangerous, and Linda walked over to make sure everything was alright with the baby. She saw a tiny child fast asleep, with pale delicate eyelids and a rosebud mouth.

"Oh, you precious thing!" Linda whispered. "I wish you were mine..." Little did Linda know that her greatest dream was about to come true.

A mother will fight tooth and nail for her child.

Linda waited by the stroller for twenty minutes, but no mom appeared. She started to worry. Had something happened to the baby's mother? She asked a passerby to go into the baby shop and ask if it was a customer's baby.

Nope. No one in that shop or the nearby establishments had seen the baby or its mother. So Linda called the mall security and the police. By that time, over an hour had gone by.

The security guards and the police searched the mall, but whoever the baby's mom was, she was gone. Linda was horrified. Who would abandon such a precious baby in a busy mall?

Child Services took the baby (it was a boy), but over the next few months, Linda stayed in touch. She checked up on the baby, and finally, she asked social workers if she and her husband could apply to adopt the tiny boy.

Linda and her husband Ron had to go through a lot of interviews, but eventually, they took little Davy home. Linda and Ron were delighted. Finally, their lives were complete.

Davy was the center of his parents' world, a bubbly, boisterous little boy who started to run before he could walk. Linda's heart overflowed. She loved this baby more than her own life.

But the little family's peace was shattered when Davy was three years old. Child Services called and said that Davy's biological mother was demanding her baby's return.

"But we adopted him!" gasped Linda. "He's ours! He's never known any other parents!"

However, Davy's biological mother claimed that her son had been stolen from her and that she had been looking for him for three long years. She was prepared to take Linda and Ron to court to vacate the adoption.

"Please," Linda begged the social worker. "Let me talk to her! If she's a mother she will want the best for Davy! He will be heartbroken if he's torn away from us!"

To the social worker's surprise, Anna, Davy's mother, agreed to meet Linda and Ron. She was a tall woman with pouty, sensual lips and long, sharp, artificial nails. She didn't look at all motherly.

"I know you love Davy," Linda said. "I know you want what's best for him..."

"Honey," Anna drawled. "You can drop the sweet momma act with me! I know what you're after! The same as me, right? How much are you gettin' for my kid?"

"Getting?" gasped Linda. "I don't understand!"

"Money, honey!" Anna said. "I been doin' some research, and if you know how to milk the cow, you can rake in thousands on federal grants, state subsidies, social welfare, not to mention those bleedin' heart foundations!"

"Money?" gasped Ron. "You think we want Davy for MONEY?"

"Why else?" asked Anna.

"We love him," Linda said angrily. "That's what else. Is the money why you want our son?"

"MY SON!" said Anna. "And don't you forget it! When he was born, I was with this rich guy. We traveled and partied a lot, see? So the kid really cramped my style.

"So I dropped him, but when Frank dumped me, a friend told me about the single mom's gravy train. That kid's my meal ticket, and I'm cashing it in!"

Linda smiled. "You think so?" she asked, raising her cell phone. "I've just recorded this whole conversation, and I'm presenting it to the judge!"

What can we learn from this story?

  • Family is created by love, not DNA. Even though Anna was Davy's biological mother, it was Linda who loved and cherished him.
  • A mother will fight tooth and nail for her child. Linda was determined to save Davy from a woman who just wanted to exploit him as a meal ticket, and she succeeded.
