The film touched the hearts of many, taking home the Golden Screen, Germany Award in 1982 and earning a nomination for a Saturn Award as well as a Young Artist Award.

A sequel was released in 2006, titled "The Fox and the Hound 2," but it didn't appear to receive the same acclamation as the first film. However, it did win a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in a Direct-to-Video Project.
