Book readers and movie-goers were introduced to Dobby in the third installment of the "Harry Potter" franchise, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Knowing the danger that Potter was in while attending Hogwarts during the year the book was set, Dobby tried to save "The Chosen One's" life on multiple occasions. He did so by, funnily, putting Potter in grievously dangerous situations to scare him into leaving the school.

Throughout this third novel and movie, fans learned that Dobby was the enslaved house elf to the Malfoy family, who was, at the time, at least suspected by Potter to be connected to the main antagonist, Voldemort.

To rid himself of slavery, Dobby's master had to present the elf with a piece of clothing. Potter tricked Lucius Malfoy, the patriarch of the Malfoy family, into giving Dobby a sock, leaving the elf with his newfound freedom.

Read 38 of the adorable elves' quotes below to follow his journey from slavery to freedom.

In "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Dobby leaves the story just as he came into it — trying to save Harry Potter, except this time, he ends up being murdered in the process.

Dobby is only one character but represents a broader side plot in the Harry Potter franchise concerning all the house elves and their subjugation in the magical world created by J.K Rowling.

In the book, Hermione Granger, one of the main characters, created S.P.E.W., or The Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare in an effort to free the house elves. Her efforts were not met with much support from other Hogwarts students and even some elves who felt content in their subjugated positions. However, while working at the Ministry of Magic, she persevered and managed to help empower house elves and other magical creatures facing prejudice.
