When he was only a teenager, Denji's father died, leaving an enormous amount of debt for his son to pay off to a criminal syndicate, Yakuza. He turned to Pochia, a chainsaw devil and his pet, who paid him money to kill devils.

However, Denji died at the hands of the Yakuza, once again looking as though it was all over for him. But, he was brought back to life by his pet, which merged with him and gave him his devil powers by proxy.

Denji then works for the Public Safety Bureau, slaying devils under the instruction of the bureau's Makima, with whom he is infatuated. She almost treats him as her pet, with Denji completely wrapped around her finger.
