Cynthia started working as a waitress in a fancy restaurant, hoping to get the best tips and possibly find a rich man to marry. One day, a poorly dressed man showed up asking for some water, and she refused to serve him and mocked him too. But the head waiter scolded her, and she soon regretted her actions.

"I can't believe the tip I got the other day. The man loved the bottle of whiskey I served him so much that he just got a $100 bill-out. But then again, that's why I worked so hard to get a job here," Cynthia told the head waiter, Jack, who was an older and wiser man. He got along with everyone, although he was technically their boss.

"I know. Some people are extremely generous at this restaurant. They love the food and the service as well. I'm lucky to have been part of this business for so long. The family ambience feels wonderful, too," Jack commented, making Cynthia frown at his words.

"Well, I don't plan to work here all my life. I was honestly hoping to find a husband here, too, so l could become a patron here too," she explained, laughing but being completely serious. Jack just shook his head with a small smile, then he went to check on something.

Suddenly, a man arrived. "Can I please get a glass of water," he requested, looking exhausted.

Cynthia looked at him, noticing his choice of clothing and his demeanor. She determined after a cursory glance that he was far from rich. He didn't belong there. "Sir, this is a fancy restaurant. You can get water somewhere else," she said mockingly at him.

"Please, I have somewhere to go, but I just dropped by for some water. I'm really thirsty," the man continued.

Cynthia crossed her arms. "Didn't you hear what I said? Please, go somewhere else or I will call security. Who comes here in those clothes, for God's sakes," she scoffed.

Suddenly, Jack returned and heard the last of Cynthia's words. He stepped in right away, interrupting before she could mock the man even more. "Sir, what do you need?"

Cynthia's mouth opened wide as if she was offended by Jack attending to this man. But he ignored her.

"A glass of water would be wonderful, please," the man requested once again, and Jack nodded, telling him it would be right out.

The client drank and asked how much money he owed, to which Jack answered, "Water is free here. You're welcome to come back for more anytime."

The man left, giving Cynthia a strange look. But she paid him no attention. Instead, she focused on Jack. "Why in the world would you serve that man? He was obviously not a deserving patron of this establishment," she demanded to know.

"Cynthia, it costs us nothing to serve him a glass of water, and he was going to pay. We're in the service industry. We serve people. Also, I don't judge a book by its cover. Everyone deserves our respect," Jack scolded her, but she just shrugged. Another customer came over demanding service, and they got busy for the rest of the night.

Cynthia had a table full of businessmen dressed in suits and ties. She was almost drooling thinking about the tip she was going to make.

Suddenly, several customers came in, led by the man who had asked for water. He was still in his simple clothing and accompanied by similarly dressed people. He stopped at the entrance and yelled, "I just sold my company for $30 million! Woo!"

The restaurant broke into applause, and Cynthia's mouth dropped open. The man looked over at Jack. "You, sir, please, can you be our waiter. We're going to need many menus because more people are coming, and bring on the whiskey bottles!"

Jack nodded and led the group to their tables. At one point, he met Cynthia's eyes and smirked ever so lightly.

She went to get the bill folder on her last table and was shocked that the group of businessmen had left her no tip at all.

  • Never judge a book by its cover. Jack's words couldn't be truer because sometimes the wealthiest people dress in the simplest clothes, while others only pretend to be rich by wearing expensive clothes.
  • In the service industry, it is always in the company's best interest to be kind to every client, no matter who or how they look. Cynthia treated the man asking for water poorly, judging him for his appearance alone, and she later learned her lesson
